Creative Sewing Skills for Youth: Mondays

Learn the basics of sewing to bring your imagination to life!
This class serves as an introduction to sewing a strong project. The curriculum is structured to facilitate progression from machine introduction and beginner competency to sewing with confidence.
Beginning projects include:
- Drawstring Bag
- Circle Pillow
- Pillow Case
Intermediate and independent projects:
- Once a student has acquired the necessary skills and confidence to work semi-independently, the instructor will work in cooperation with each student to create projects tailored to their interest and increasing ability
Skills taught
- Threading and operating a sewing machine safely and independently
- Understanding sewing terms
- How to follow instructions and create a project
- How to identify and correctly use tools
- Measuring, marking, and cutting increasing varieties of fabrics
- How to progress from straight line-only sewing to navigating curves, turning corners, and building dimensional projects from flat patterns
- How to identify problems and find solutions
- How to deconstruct and recreate projects
No sewing experience required. Fabric purchase by student. Some fabrics available at RFA. All sewing equipment is provided.
