The 150th Anniversary of the Chinese Taoist Temple At the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park

History will come alive when a traditional Chinese Lion Dance will be presented at the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park (SHP) to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Weaverville Chinese Taoist Temple. This free special event, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, will take place in front of the “Temple of the Forest Beneath the Clouds,” a Taoist temple established in 1861 and finished as it stands today in April 1874.

Chinese believe the lions will preserve peace and tranquility in the community and prevail over all evil to bring joy and happiness for the community. For the first time, Weaverville will be visited by a Chinese Dragon to help celebrate the temples anniversary and the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. There will be a traditional firecracker display after the lion dance, along with hot tea and fortune cookies provided by the Weaverville Joss House Association. Several food venders will be available at this event. Chinese crafts for kids along with tours of the temple will also be offered during the event.
The Lion Dance and Dragon performance will be dependent on good weather.

State Parks supports equal access. Prior to arrival, visitors with disabilities who need assistance should contact Weaverville Joss House SHP at (530) 623-5284.

The historic park is in downtown Weaverville at the corner of Main and Oregon Streets.
